UH coaches' shows may move to KHET

Move over Barney, look out McNeil Lehrer, make room for . . .The June Jones Show?

The University of Hawai'i is considering moving its coaches' television shows to public television as early as this fall, officials confirmed yesterday.

Until now, coaches shows have gone to the commercial station that held the school's television rights contracts. KFVE (Channel 5) holds the rights through 2002 and has produced shows featuring coaches in most major sports.

But Hugh Yoshida, UH athletic director, said the school is exploring the possibility of moving the shows to KHET (Channel 10) to provide more flexibility in scheduling.

"It is something we're looking at," Yoshida said. "We're in discussions (with KHET and KFVE)."

Yoshida said UH would be responsible for lining up sponsors to underwrite the shows a la "The June Jones Show presented by Verizon."

Currently, most coaches of major sports at UH supplement their base salaries with money from appearing on such shows, some nearly as much as $50,000. Money from sponsorships sold by UH 's marketing department would be used to pay for those shows so public TV accounts would not be affected, Yoshida said.

John Fink, president and general manager of KHNL and its leased sister station, KFVE, said he was "willing to do whatever makes the most sense for the university and the station."

CAMPS

UH football: Hawai'i head football coach June Jones has announced two camps for youngsters entering the fifth grade through 12th grade.

Both camps are non-contact and will focus on skills and techniques as taught by the UH coaching staff.

The first camp, June 18-20, is open to incoming fifth-graders through eighth-graders. Cost is $75 per camper and registration will be Monday, June 18, at 7:30 a.m. at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The camp will be in two sessions — 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. for fifth- and sixth-graders, and 1 p.m. to 3:30 for seventh- and eighth-graders.

The second camp, June 22-25, is open to incoming ninth-graders through 12th-graders and will have two options — an overnight camp for $295 per camper (includes three meals and dorm room) and a day camp for $175 (includes two meals).

Registration for the overnight session will be Friday, June 22 from noon to 2 at the Hale Lehua Dormitory lobby. Registration for the day camp will also be on June 22 at the same site from 2 p.m.

Discounts are available for teams of 10 or more. For more information, call the UH football office (956-6508) or Ken Buckles (1-877-498-5615).

SURFING

Australian wins: Australian Layne Beachley won the first round of the OP Pro women's division yesterday off the Mentawai Islands.

In wind-blown waves of 3 to 6 feet, Beachley consistently caught the biggest and best waves to earn a $2,500 bonus for the first-round victory.

Fellow Australian Serena Brooke placed second, followed by Kaua'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly. They are the only four surfers invited.

Only six surfers are in the men's field, including Hawai'i's Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Shane Dorian. The men did not compete yesterday.
