Juice Newton, Grammy Award-winning country singer, will perform aboard the USS Missouri in a Fourth of July celebration complete with fireworks and barbecue.

The event aboard the Mighty Mo is a benefit for the Battleship Missouri Memorial's restoration and education programs.

Newton, known for such chart-busting hits as "Queen of Hearts," "Angel of the Morning," "The Sweetest Thing," "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me" and "Break It to Me Gently," has emerged as a major crossover country star with pop wallop.

Originally with Capitol Records, where she logged her earlier hits and earned her musical stripes, she now is with RCA where she has logged such country best-sellers as "What Can I Do With My Heart," "Cheap Love," "You Want To Make You Mine," "Old Flame" and "Both to Each Other." Her latest CD is "American Girl."

Newton and her band will entertain on the Missouri's fantail, with a dance floor under the big guns of Turret No. 3.

Among the activities planned: ship tours from 5:30 to 7 p.m., happy hour from 7 to 7:30 p.m., dance music from 7 p.m., fireworks at 8:30 p.m., followed by the performance, around 8:45 p.m.

Tickets: $25, on sale starting tomorrow at all Ticket Plus locations, including the Blaisdell Center box office, Tower Records Kahala Mall and Pearl Kai Shopping Center, Tower Video on Kapi'iolani Boulevard, Bloch Arena at Pearl Harbor, all O'ahu Sizzler Restaurants, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park, and the Battleship Missouri Memorial; $5 from each ticket will go to the museum. Food purchase is optional; the admission does not include the barbecue, by Kahala Caterers, or the all-American picnic fare and other refreshments. Charge by phone: 526-4400.
