Hannemann has bypass surgery

By Robbie Dingeman
Advertiser City Hall Writer

Former City Councilman Mufi Hannemann yesterday underwent scheduled coronary bypass surgery at Kuakini Medical Center, according to longtime campaign coordinator Trudi Saito.

Hannemann, 46, was out of surgery by yesterday afternoon, she said. Saito described the medical procedure as "preventive" and not the result of any sudden attack or event. She said Hannemann's doctors discovered the need for the operation during a recent routine physical.

Saito said that doctors pronounced the procedure a success. "He's fine. He's in excellent physical condition," she said.

Hannemann, a familiar face in Hawai'i politics, served on the Honolulu City Council from 1994 through last year when he resigned to run against incumbent Mayor Jeremy Harris.
