HONOLULU

Planning group to elect officers

The Citizen Advisory Committee for the O'ahu Metropolitan Planning Organization will elect new officers at the group's next meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Room 423 at the State Capitol.

The committee will discuss the state Department of Transportation's state-wide transportation plan and hear highlights of OMPO's Policy Committee and Technical Advisory Committee meetings.

Surf team to raise money

The Wai'anae High School Surf Team fund-raiser tomorrow is intended to help the group pay for a trip to California to compete in the high school national surfing championships.

The seven-member team, which includes four boys and three girls, will set up a booth at the high school cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to sell sample clothing from manufacturer Quiksilver/Roxy, with a portion of the proceeds going to fund the trip.

PVT Corp., which runs a private landfill on Lualualei Naval Road, has donated $3,000 toward airfare and entry fees, but money is still needed to rent a van and for lodging.

The championship will be July 9-15 in Oceanside and the Wai'anae team will compete against teams from Texas, California, Florida and North and South Carolina in several events, including bodyboarding, shortboarding and longboarding.

EAST HONOLULU

Traffic calming meeting slated

A second traffic calming workshop for the Wai'alae Iki community will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kalani High School cafeteria.

Representatives from the city's Department of Transportation Services and other traffic planners have reviewed the community's suggestions made at the last meeting in April.

They will present a plan to slow motorists along Laukahi Street.

Storyteller to perform today

Storyteller Bobby Norfolk will give a free performance at 11 a.m. today at the 'Aina Haina Public Library, 5246 Kalanianaole Highway.

Norfolk is from St. Louis, Mo., and will perform "Today's Troubadour" at the library.

Norfolk combines comedy, theatre and mime to present story performances. The event is part of the Children's Summer Reading program.

NORTH SHORE

Invitation to beach cleanup

Save the Sea Turtles International Foundation needs volunteers for a beach cleanup and marine debris study beginning at noon Saturday at Chun's Reef, 61-529 Kamehameha Highway.

The regular cleanup and debris monitoring is part of a five-year study to determine the sources of litter on the beach, said the foundation's Marlu West. The study is being conducted by the Center for Marine Conservation.

Volunteers will be provided with gloves, bags, tools and water and should wear sturdy shoes and sunscreen.


WINDWARD

Kailua board picks leaders

Faith Evans will retain chairmanship of the Kailua Neighborhood Board, a position she has held for two years.

Board leaders hold office for one year at a time.

The other officers elected last week were Jon Chinen, vice chairman, and Jim Corcoran, secretary.

Committee heads were also selected. They are Charles Prentiss, Planning & Zoning/Capital Improvement Projects; Donna Wong, Environment; Bruce Huddleston, Transportation; Debbi Glanstein, Government & Community Services; and Duane Samson, Parks & Recreation.


Animals benefit from 'PetWalk'

The Hawaiian Humane Society's annual fund-raiser, PetWalk 2001, will be at 8 a.m. June 24 at Kapi'olani Park Bandstand.

The event includes a two-mile walk around the park, pet games and a pet costume contest.
