Punahou names Tacon boys basketball coach

Advertiser Staff

Greg Tacon, a Lahainaluna High School graduate and former three-sport athlete at the University of LaVerne, was introduced as Punahou's new head boys basketball coach yesterday.

Tacon replaces Alan Lum, who resigned on April 23 after seven seasons. Tacon was most recently the head football and boys basketball coach at Shorecrest High School in Seattle. Shorecrest, with 1,700 students, competes in the area's highest classification (4A).

"He really impressed us as an educator," Punahou athletic director Tom Holden said. "He has a tremendous passion for basketball, but we also think he will impress good values on our kids."

Holden said Tacon, who was not immediately available for comment, attended St. Louis for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Lahainaluna. At LaVerne, which is located near Los Angeles, Tacon played football, basketball and volleyball.

Before moving to Shorecrest, Tacon spent five years as an assistant basketball coach at San Lorenzo High School near Oakland, Calif.

Holden said he will begin interviewing candidates for the Buffanblu girls basketball head coaching position "very shortly." Shelley Kahuanui Fey resigned at the end of this past season.

The Punahou girls lost in the state semifinals to eventual champion 'Aiea. Holden said he hopes to find a replacement by the end of summer.
