The winners of Hawai'i History Day 2001, a program of the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities, are:

• Junior Division, grades 6-8:

Displays: Caleb Bowen of Kahuku Intermediate, first place; Whitney Wagner of Ka'umana Elementary, second place; Kendra Dilcher, Shannon Schaper and Sara Mirels of Kahuku Intermediate, third place.

Historical Research Essay: Carly Munekiyo of 'Iao Intermediate, first place; Lizzette Sauque of Kahuku Intermediate, second place; Kirstin Marler of Kahuku Intermediate, third place.

Documentary Media: Joy Miyamoto and Sarah Fong of Kapunahala Elementary, first place; Janelle Young and Kim Mashiyama of Waiakea Intermediate, second place; Amanda Baize of Kahuku Intermediate, third place.

Performance: Julia Shimizu, Lonona Brown and Betsy Brown of Wai'anae High, first place; Jadee Bowen, Ke'ilani Yang and Brooke Jones of Kahuku High, second place; Lydell Lawrence, LeGrand Lawrence and Ashton Alvarez of Kahuku High, third place.

• Special Awards:

The Hawai'i Council for the Humanities awarded the sixth annual Hawai'i History Day Outstanding Teacher Awards to Amy Kawamura and Terry Oshiro of Waipahu High and Janyce Omura of Maui High. Each teacher received an engraved koa plaque.

Hawai'i Pacific University presented $2,500 scholarships to Whitney Nekoba of Waiakea High, and Betsy Brown, Lonona Brown and Julia Shimizu of Wai'anae High.

Brigham Young University-Hawai'i Campus presented two full-tuition, one-semester scholarships to Bethany Smith of Kahuku High and Colleen Kohashi of Iolani School.

Chaminade University presented a $5,600 scholarship to Sienna Palmer of Kahuku High.

The Alexander and Baldwin Foundation gave two cash awards for outstanding projects in plantation, agricultural or maritime history to Brittney Taoka, Natalie Schack and Julissa Forsythe of Mililani Middle, and Blake Kurisu of Waiakea High.

The Bendon Family Foundation gave two cash awards for outstanding projects in the history of ideas and culture to Elise Fujimoto of 'Iao Intermediate and Natalie Krawciw of Kalaheo High.

Bishop Museum presented the Mary Kawena Pukui Award, which recognizes outstanding projects related to the history of Hawai'i and the Pacific, to Sarah Fukumoto of Mililani Middle, Whitney Nekoba of Waiakea High and Daniel Mueller of Waiakea High.

The Foundation for Hawai'i Women's History gave two cash awards for outstanding projects on women's history to Arialle Haiola of Kahuku Intermediate and Margo Hartford, Jessica Dunn and Alison Altz of Waialua High.

The Hawai'i Association of School Librarians gave two cash awards for outstanding research using primary documents to Victoria Tunstall, Kristopher Moseley and Tanya Ferreira of Mililani Middle and Ian Tapu of Kahuku High.

The Center for Oral History gave two cash awards for outstanding research using oral histories to Whitney Wagner of Ka'umana Elementary and Eniko Krizsovenszky of Waimea High.

The Center for Korean Studies gave a cash award for an outstanding project in Korean or Korean-American history to Thomas Noh and Valerie Sakimura of University Laboratory School.

The Arab World and Islamic Resources organization gave awards for outstanding research in Arab or Islamic history to Michelle Bonilla of Maui High and Kai Lopez, Kenny Maeng and Gary Hu of McKinley High.

Native Books Inc. gave two awards for outstanding projects in Hawaiian or Pacific island history to Jake Raquel, Gilbert Julian Jr. and Jessica Ayau of Waipahu Intermediate and Nani Ka'auamo, Michelle Horen and Pua Funes-Smith of Hana High. Students each received books on Hawaiian heritage from Native Books Inc.

The Barbara Bennett Peterson Award in History was presented to the outstanding junior and senior division essays, Carly Munekiyo of 'Iao Intermediate and Sienna Palmer of Kahuku High. Each student received a koa bowl.

The Sons and Daughters of the 100th Infantry Battalion gave an award for excellence in World War II history to Vahid Ajimine of Maui High.

Author Nanette Purnell donated books for awards to outstanding projects in local Island history to Billy Nihipali of Kahuku Intermediate and Colleen Kohashi of Iolani School.
