Bastille Day fete at La Pietra

A Bastille Day celebration, offering food, wine and fashions, will be from 4 to 6 p.m. July 14 at La Pietra-Hawai'i School for Girls on the slopes of Diamond Head.

The event commemorates the 212th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris, the beginning of the French Revolution.

Guests may partake of French-inspired hors d'oeuvres, wines and soft drinks while listening to French music performed by Escargot, featuring Pierre Grill. Make-up artists from Chanel will demonstrate the "French look," and a nail tattoo artist from Christian Dior will also participate.

Glenn Silva, a French professor and art historian, will discuss the French Revolution through art.

Artists from the Polynesian Cultural Center will also take the stage, performing dances from their recently opened Tahitian Hut at the Tahitian Village in La'ie.

Tickets: $30 for adults, $15 for full-time students. Information: Alliance Francaise of Hawai'i at 597-8066.

MVT readies 'America' play

Manoa Valley Theatre has cast a trio of local comic actors— R. Kevin Doyle, Dan Kois and Mathias Maas — to enact scores of characters in its season finale, "The Complete History of America (Abridged)," playing July 11 through 29 at MVT.

Mark Lutwak, artistic director of the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, will guest-direct the comic condensation — running time is 90 minutes — of 500 years of American history in the play by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor.

The madcap play is likened to a high school American history class taught by the Three Stooges-meets-the-Blue Man Group, with a measure of Penn and Teller. Everyone from Amerigo Vespucci to Bill Clinton gets the skewer.

Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 p.m. Sundays. Tickets: $22 for all seats, with discounts available for seniors, students, military and patrons 25 and under. A buffet by The Eclectic Chef is offered on the MVT lanai 90 minutes before curtain, except Sundays. Information: 988-6131.
