Four Isle golfers advance in U.S. Women's Publinx

Four golfers from Hawai'i, including Waiakea High School's Leah Whiting and 11-year-old Punahou School student Michelle Wie, qualified for match play at the 25th U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship yesterday in Long Grove, Ill.

Whiting, who will be a senior in the fall, shot a 7-over 79 yesterday for a two-round total of 156 to lead the Hawai'i qualifiers.

Wie shot 76—160, Lisa Kajihara of Maui shot 80—162 and Sally Soranaka of Honolulu shot 75—162.

The cut was 165, with 64 golfers advancing to the start of today's match play.

Candie Kung, 19, who will be a junior at Southern California, shot 70—141 to take medalist honors at the 6,110-yard Kemper Lakes Golf Club.

Golfers from Hawai'i who competed, but missed the cut were: Kiilani Matsuyoshi, Wailua, 78—168; Lehua Wise, Lihue, 89—170; Christine Kim, Hilo, 83—170; Rose Pagan, Kula, 87—175; Whitney Ueno, Hilo, 89—177; Jennie Pleas, Lihue, 90—179; Kimberly Yama, Lihue, 90—179; and Shelcie Takenouchi, Lihue, 88—180.
