More honors for Nebraska pitcher Komine

Shane Komine, a 1998 Kalani High graduate, yesterday was named a second-team college All-America pitcher by Baseball America Magazine, his second All-America citation in two days and fourth this season.
Komine, a junior at Nebraska, was a 19th-round choice of the St. Louis Cardinals in the major-league first-year player draft on June 5, but has not announced whether he will sign a professional contract or return to Nebraska.
Previously this season he was chosen first-team Louisville Slugger All-America by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, and second team by The Sporting News and American Baseball Coaches Association.
He had a 14-2 record with Nebraska this season and holds school career records in wins (31), strikeouts (395) and innings pitched (334 1/3).
VOLLEYBALL
Bragado qualifies: Top-seeded Danalee Bragado, from Honolulu, and Ali Wood defeated fifth-seeded Nancy Mason and Leanne Schuster in Gstaad, Switzerland yesterday to earn the fifth spot for the United States in the international event.
The Gstaad stop is the first of five combined men's and women's events on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.
Bragado and Wood (Long Beach, Calif.) scored a 16-21, 21-18, 15-12 victory in 48 minutes. Bragado and Wood are seeded 21st in the Main Draw after winning all four qualification matches.
The 32-team women's Main Draw starts today. The 69-team men's Qualification Tournament started yesterday with Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong winning to remain in contention for a fourth USA men's spot in the Main Draw.
At the 2001 Montreux Volley Masters last week, the U.S. women's indoor team defeated Italy, 25-20, 26-24, 20-25, 27-25, 15-13, to finish fifth. Former University of Hawai'i All-Americans Heather Bown and Robyn Ah Mow start for the U.S., and current Wahine All-American Lily Kahumoku is a reserve.
The U.S. men's national team, with former Rainbow Clay Stanley, suffered a serious setback to its hopes of advancing to the 2001 FIVB World League final round when it lost to the Netherlands, 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 19-25.
BOXING
Lone survivor: Glenn Dunnings of Honolulu was the only Hawai'i boxer to qualify for the semifinals of the National Junior Olympic Boxing Championships yesterday at Marquette, Mich.
Dunnings defeated Vaughn Alexander, of St. Louis, Mo., 4-1, in a 139-pound bout.
