LEEWARD

Kolekole run set for Aug. 4

The 19th annual Kolekole Pass Half-Marathon and 6-Mile Walk benefiting the American Cancer Society will be held Aug. 4.

The 13.1-mile race starts at 6 a.m. at Schofield Barracks and the Kolekole Pass walk at 7:30 a.m. Entrants must be 7 years of age or older by the date of the race. The entry fee is $22 for entries postmarked by July 16 and $25 for those postmarked by July 31.

Program needs more children

The summer enrichment program at Kamokila Community Park in Honokai Hale is seeking more children to sign up for activities.

Kamokila offers free classes from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in arts and crafts, board games, volleyball, indoor games and basketball.

Only 32 children have signed up for the classes and park manager Paul Kelly would like to see at least 40 using the program every day.

Executive to speak in Kapolei

Lynne Madden, executive vice president of Island Heritage, will discuss capitalizing on the talent within your work force at the next Kapolei Rotary Club meeting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday in the Kapolei High School faculty/staff lounge.

Vision team seeks ideas

The 'Aiea/Pearl City Community Vision Team is seeking participation and input from residents on how to spend $2 million of city capital improvement project money in the area.

It will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Alvah Scott Elementary School.

The group will collect ideas for projects on needed planning and improvements in the larger 'Aiea community.


Schofield dogs win competition

25th Infantry Division (Light) and U.S. Army, Hawai'i military working dogs have won first and second place for narcotics in the worldwide military K9 competition.

The dogs competed among a field of 40 dogs representing all branches of the service. This is the first time the Schofield military working dogs have won the annual competition.

Tessa, a female, and handler Sgt. Mario Beldiman won the first place award in narcotics. Tessa has been with the K9 unit since 1995.

Bastar, a male, won second place for narcotics, third place for scouting and fifth place for building search. His handler is Sgt. Lee Davie. Bastar has been with the unit since 1999.


Tripler lab recertified

Tripler Army Medical Center's Environmental Health Water Laboratory has been recertified by the state Department of Health.

The lab tests Army water systems on the Big Island and O'ahu, including Schofield, Fort Shafter, Helemano and Aliamanu Military Reservations, as well as Tripler Army Medical Center.

Staff performances, procedures and the facility were evaluated, said Margaret Tippy, Tripler Army Medical Center Public Affairs Officer.


HONOLULU

School workers, staff honored

The state Board of Education has awarded certificates of achievement to school workers, and awarded Waimea High's custodial staff with the Team Excellence Award of Merit.

The certificates of achievement went to Raymond Belaski, school custodian at Manana Elementary; Jean Hayashi, school administrative services assistant, Makaha Elementary; Sandra Matias, school custodian at Campbell High; Warden Pasion, custodian at Radford High; and Sharyn Sekine, educational assistant at 'Aiea High.

Team winners of the Waimea High custodial department include Arlene Kuapahi, head custodian; and custodians Grace Acain, Fausto Gragasin, Alfreda Hookano, Dean Hugo and Loreen Kona.


River of Life asks for help

River of Life Mission needs volunteers and non-perishable food donations.
