Dr. JAMES WILLIS BASS, a longtime Hawai'i pediatrician and a retired Army colonel, died June 12 after a long illness. He was 71. See story.

ABRAHAM "CHIEF" AIONA, 75, retired Maui police chief, Maui County councilman and OHA trustee who died June 21, 2001, will have a service in his memory 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ballard Family Mortuary, Maui with visitation from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Another visitation will take place 9 a.m. to noon Friday at St. George's Catholic Church, Waimanalo, O'ahu; service noon. Graveside service 2 p.m. at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, Kane'ohe. Aloha attire. BERNARDO ANCHETA, 75, of 'Aiea, died June 20, 2001. Born in Laoag City, Philippines. VIOLET EN KYAU SOONG ENGLISH, 83, mother of Senator Kalani English and resident of Haneo'o, Hana, Maui died June 17, 2001. Born in Waikiki. An expert lay-botanist at Helani Gardens, Hana who later traveled extensively on the campaign trail with her son. Survived by sons, Gordon Boyd and J. Kalani; a grandson; three granddaughters. MARIANO AURELLANO ESPEJO, 85, of 'Ewa Beach, died June 17, 2001. Born in Barangay 15 B Alay, Badoc, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. WILLIAM "BILL" JOHN GEILFUSS, 91, of Honolulu, died June 20, 2001. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa. A member of Elks Lodge 616 who worked for the architectural firm of Law and Wilson and retired from the Corp of Engineers. Survived by wife, Charlotte; children, Bonnie Avery and Clayton; two grandchildren. Service 10 a.m. Saturday at Elks Lodge 616 in, Waikiki. Scattering of ashes fronting the lodge to follow.
