Achievers

Paul Linden of Waiakea High and Raina Pang of Maryknoll High received a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program Scholarship to spend the 2001-2002 school year in Germany. Linden and Pang are the only students from Hawai'i chosen for the honor, which is worth more than $10,000.

The winners of the state finals of the AAA/Ford Student Auto Skills contest, which is held to encourage students to pursue career opportunities in automotive service, are: Karl Espinda and Robert Bonnes of Maui High, first place; Jayson Lumas and Allen Evangelista of Maui High, second place; Zachary Sakamoto and Gavin Nohara of Lahainaluna High, third place.

The Leeward Community College Clerical Staff Council awarded $1,000 Doris Asato Memorial scholarships to Norma Ganir and Michelle Garcia of Waipahu High.

Papa John's Pizza Restaurants honored the following high school seniors as 2001 Papa John's Scholars. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship. They are: Brennan Howell of Radford High; Cherylin Izno of Kalaheo High; Clifford Kia-Cox of Wai'anae High; Yoon-jee Kim of Roosevelt High; Brandon Komatsu of Waipahu High; Tracey Kubota of Pearl City High; LiuLani Liu of McKinley High; Janilee Mariano of Farrington High; Jill Matsushima of Castle High; Sara Matsuura of Sacred Hearts Academy; Charmaine Navalta of Leilehua High.

The Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation awarded scholarships to the following high school seniors:

The Mamoru Takitani Distinguished Student Award of $10,000: Taryn M. Ishida of Moloka'i High & Intermediate; the Aiko Takitani Distinguished Student Award of $10,000: Cori Okabayashi of Kailua High; the Karen Uno Outstanding Student Award of $5,000: Sara Y. Matsuura of Sacred Hearts Academy.
