Teixeira wins Sandy's bodyboarding contest

Eugene Teixeira won the inaugural Turbo Sandy's Summer Slam bodyboarding contest yesterday at Sandy Beach.

Teixeira advanced through four heats in 1-foot waves to take the $1,000 top prize in the open men's division. In an all-Hawai'i final, John Young was second, followed by Ikaika Villa and Kelly Hunt.

Former world champion Daniela Freitas of Brazil won the open women's division and $500. Fellow Brazilian Karla Costa placed second, followed by Shirlie Thompson and Nora Neal.

Derek Miyashiro won the 17-over amateur division, while Philip Pembrook took the 16-under amateur title.

The two-day event drew more than 130 competitors. It was the first major bodyboarding contest held at Sandy Beach in five years.

GOLF

• Kapalua Clambake: Kevin Hayashi, a professional at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course, shot a two-round total of 137 to win the Ashworth Kapalua Clambake Pro-Am at the Bay and Village courses.

The team headed by pro Kevin Ralbovsky won the three-day tournament with a 304 score.

The event raised $5,000 for Maui Special Olympics and $1,000 for Lahainaluna High.

• Junior Tour Series: Kira-Ann Murashige of Hilo and Ryan Kohler of San Diego won the 15-18 age divisions of the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association's Junior Tour Series on Saturday at Hapuna Golf Course.

Kohler won the tiebreaker over Hawai'i's Daniel Ciez. Murashige also won by a tiebreaker over Maui's Rie Ganir.

Other division winners were: Amanda Wilson and Alan Baab (13-14 ), Joy Kim and David Kim (11-12), and Kimberly Kim and Warren Ching (10-and-under).

• UHH's Prather honored: University of Hawai'i-Hilo basketball player Scott Prather has been selected an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

Prather, a junior from Kula, Maui, averaged 15.5 points in helping the Vulcans (16-11) to their first winning season in six years.

Prather is a business major with a 3.898 grade-point average.

The Arthur Ashe Jr. award is presented by Black Issues in Higher Education to outstanding student-athletes.
