Watch speed in Wai'alae Iki

Wai'alae Iki speeders beware: Police will conduct a CTAP — Community Traffic Awareness Partnership — with radar guns, ticket books and a speed monitor all day Saturday on Laukahi Street, near Kamole Park.

This will be the second time in as many years that police and the community have urged motorists to drive the steep hill at the posted 25 mph speed limit, said Honolulu Police Department Sgt. Gary Kawasaki.

Officers will cite speeders, Kawasaki said. The average speed on Laukahi has been about 40 mph, he said.

The community has tried to address the speeding problem and is among several neighborhoods islandwide targeted for traffic calming measures that must be paid for by the city.

"This is a fast street," said resident Manya Sandefur. "Once you're in the street, you have to run like hell."

Hawai'i Kai board meets

The new members of the Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board will take their seats at the meeting tonight at 7 at the Haha'ione Elementary School cafeteria.

The board also will take nominations and elect a resident to fill a vacancy from the Marina East area, by Koko Isle Circle.

A presentation will be made about repairs to sewer lines on Lunalilo Home Road from Kalaniana'ole Highway to Anapalau Street.

For details, call 527-5578.

On-ramp closed for repaving

The Old Wai'alae Road on-ramp to the H-1 Freeway westbound will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today for paving work.

The state Department of Transportation advises motorists to allow extra travel time and take an alternate route if possible.
