Tuttle back as Punahou track coach

Advertiser Staff

Dan Tuttle III, who coached Punahou School to 10 state championships in 10 years as head girls track and field coach in the 1980s, will return to guide the Buffanblu next year.

Tuttle will replace his replacement, Steve Link, who won eight state titles in 12 years. Link resigned last month to have more family time.

Tuttle, 46, has remained at Punahou as an eighth-grade science teacher and assistant coach since he resigned in 1990 after winning every Interscholastic League of Honolulu and state championship during his decade-long tenure.

Athletic director Tom Holden, in announcing Tuttle's appointment yesterday, said: "I was so happy to hear him say he was going to do it. When you can get somebody like Dan, you don't need to look any farther."

"It's a back to the future kind of thing," Tuttle said. "I'm looking forward to the new challenge."

Punahou has by far the largest and most successful girls track and field program in the state. The Buffanblu had 168 10th- through 12th-grade girls on their roster this year. Punahou has won 26 of 35 state championships and 36 consecutive ILH titles.

Tuttle is a 1973 Punahou graduate and has been a teacher there since 1978. He graduated from Willamette University in Oregon in 1977 in physical education and biology.

Punahou has replaced seven of the eight varsity head coaches who resigned since May 2000, with only girls basketball to go, Holden said.

Hula Bowl assistants: Florida head coach Steve Spurrier and Colorado State head coach Sonny Lubick will be assistant coaches for the 2002 Hula Bowl Maui football game on Feb. 2.

They were selected by the head coaches of the opposing teams in the bowl. Oklahoma's Bob Stoops chose Spurrier while Dennis Erickson picked Lubick.

Stoops and Spurrier coached together at Florida, and Erickson and Lubick did the same at Miami of Florida.

The game will be played 1 p.m. at the War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui.
