Costco plans store in Iwilei

Advertiser Staff

Costco Wholesale has purchased 12 acres in Iwilei to build a new store, said Castle & Cooke Properties Inc., seller of the property.

The new Costco will be located on the diamond head side of Alakawa Street next to Home Depot.

The purchase wil bring Costco, with O'ahu stores in Hawaii Kai, Waipi'o and Salt Lake, close to town. There was speculation earlier this year that an Iwilei store would replace Costco's Salt Lake location.

"Costo is very excited about this opportunity," said Jeff Brotman, chairman of Costco Wholesale. "The new Costo in Iwilei will provide all of the deparetments, services and parking that we will need to best serve our members on O'ahu."

The company plans to build a 150,000-square foot store and open it by May 2002.

The purchase amount was not disclosed.
