Police seeking $3 million from feds
Associated Press
The Honolulu Police Department said it spent about $3 million for increased security at the Asian Development Bank meetings in May.
The department submitted its bill to the federal government, which sent it back seeking a more detailed account of how the money was spent.
Police Chief Lee Donohue said yesterday that more detailed figures will be available today, the end of the pay period.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority has already paid $525,000 to reimburse the department for money it spent for new equipment purchased for the for the conference held at the Hawaii Convention Center, Donohue said.
Authority director Bob Fishman said the state spent a little under $2 million to host the conference that turned out to be peaceful.
Based on the experience of other cities that have hosted conferences on behalf of the federal government, Fishman estimated the state and city can expect to recoup about half of their expenses.
The state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism said the five-day conference generated $15 million in local business.
