Hawai'i students received some of the top awards at a National History Day competition in Maryland this month.

Thirty-six Hawai'i students were among the more than 2,000 young people who attended the national event. Six Hawai'i entries were ranked in the runoffs and several went on to win awards.

They were:

• In fourth place — Jadee Bowen, Kei'lani Yang and Brooke Jones from Kahuku High School for their performance, "The Nuremberg Trial." They also received a special award for outstanding Holocaust history. Their advising teachers were Lorey Ishihara and Linda Kay Smith.

• Sixth place — Bethany Smith from Kahuku High School for her historical essay, "Martin Luther: Sparking a New Religious Epoch." She also received a special award for outstanding history of religious freedom. The advising teachers were Linda Lessing, Lorey Ishihara and Linda Kay Smith.

• Seventh place — Julia Shimizu, Lonona Brown and Betsy Brown from Wai'anae High School for their performance, "Jazz: Surpassing the Boundaries of Racism." The advising teachers were Norman Chock and Lisa-Anne James.

• Outstanding State Award from Hawai'i senior division — Justin Keys, Kevin Grigsby and Andrew Pontti from Kahuku High School for their video documentary, "The Little Rock Nine: Frontiers to Freedom."

• Outstanding State Award from Hawai'i junior division — Noelle Spring from Kahuku Intermediate School for her performance, "Patsy Mink, a Pioneer in the Fight for Women's Rights, Pioneer of Title IX."

The state's students produced their work as part of Hawai'i History Day, which is a program of the Hawai'i Council for Humanities.
