Wind farm to sell power to HELCO

HILO, Hawai'i — A 10-megawatt wind farm in North Kohala has received state Public Utilities Commission approval to sell power to Hawaii Electric Light Co. for 20 years.

The $17 million project will help prove "wind power is coming of age as a reliable generation technology," said Warren Lee, HELCO president.

The project will be developed on Kahua Ranch, an 8,000-acre cattle spread.

Lee said the island is a national leader of renewable energy development with 30 percent of its electricity coming from such sources, compared with only 2 percent nationally.

The biggest source is Puna Geothermal Venture. HELCO also draws from two other wind facilities in Ka'u and South Kohala and from two hydroelectric plants in Hilo.
