VERNON AKUNA, 72, of Victorville, Calif., formerly of Hilo, died April 2, 2001. Born in Hilo. An aircraft designer retired from Northrop Aircraft. A 1947 graduate of Hilo High School. ELVA OPPELAAR, 87, died June 4, 2001. Formerly a florist in Paterson, N.J. An avid bowler while a Kailua resident who represented Hawai'i at the National Bowling Tournament.
