Catcher Flick leaving UH baseball team

Reserve catcher Jacob Flick said he will not return to the University of Hawai'i baseball team for the 2002 season.

Flick, who just completed his redshirt freshman season with the Rainbows, batted .319 in 28 games, 18 as a starter. Sophomore Brian Bock started the bulk of UH's games.

Flick, whose family will move to Oregon in September, said he will transfer to Southwestern Oregon junior college, where he said he will try to walk-on.

The former Mid-Pacific Institute standout said he is leaving UH because he wants to become a firefighter. He added his decision wasn't that difficult.

"It's not like I'm divorcing anyone," Flick said. "The (previous coaching staff) is leaving. I just thought this was the most opportune time. But I liked playing for the Rainbows."

He added that he spoke with new UH coach Mike Trapasso earlier this week.

"He seems like a pretty nice guy," Flick said. "He kind of reminds me of Coach Dunn (Muramaru)," his coach at Mid-Pacific."

Meanwhile, redshirt freshman outfielder Chad Boudon will return to UH, Trapasso said yesterday. Boudon had been uncertain about his future plans.
