Top-seeded Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong, both of Hawai'i, were eliminated from competition after dropping their opening match in the Qualification Tournament for this weekend's $180,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in Berlin, Germany.

Malte Homeyer and Kjell Schneider of Germany, who were seeded 64th in the 70-team Qualification Tournament, scored a 16-21, 21-19 and 15-11 win over Metzger and Wong.

Metzger and Wong defeated the world's two top-ranked teams in the medal rounds of the Swiss Open to win the $27,000 first-place prize last Sunday in Gstaad, Switzerland.

SAILING CANOE

Tui Tonga undefeated: The sailing canoe Tui Tonga remained undefeated this year after winning two races in the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association last weekend.

On Saturday, Tui Tonga won the Kaluakoi Challenge in course-record time, traveling from Kaluakoi, Moloka'i, to Kailua Beach Park in 2 hours, 21 minutes. Mark Brewer served as captain for the winning crew, which was comprised of paddlers from Kaua'i.

On Sunday, the same team won the grueling Ho'olaulea O Ke Kai. Tui Tonga completed the 50-mile course from Kailua Beach Park to Hale'iwa Beach Park in 4 hours, 13 minutes.

It was Tui Tonga's sixth victory in as many tries on the 2001 Aston Race Series.

Kamakakoa, another sailing-canoe based on Kaua'i, finished a distant second in both races.

Kahiau and Laamaomao placed third and fourth, respectively, in both races. All canoes were equipped with a sail and powered by six paddlers.
