Kailua plant wins award
The Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant has received a Gold Award from the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies for one year of perfect compliance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.
The award is based on how effectively a treatment plant removes pollutants from wastewater for one year. These pollutants include suspended solids, pathogenic bacteria and toxic heavy metals.
Last month, the national association recognized the Wai'anae Wastewater Treatment Plant with its Platinum Award for receiving five consecutive Gold Awards. The Wai'anae facility was one of only 12 treatment plants in the country selected for the Platinum Award.
The association represents more than 700 sewage treatment plants nationwide.
