Olympian Kern cited by Pac-10

Olympian Sean Kern of Ho-nolulu has won a Pacific-10 Conference Medal as the outstanding senior male student-athlete at UCLA. The award is based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Kern, a 1997 Punahou School graduate from Manoa, led UCLA to the 1999 and 2000 NCAA men's water polo championships and was named NCAA Player of the Year both years. He played for the U.S. Olympic team in Sydney last September and is a member of the U.S. National Team.
Kern was a four-time water polo All-American at UCLA and a high-school All-American at Punahou.
Last month, he received a $5,000 NCAA post-graduate scholarship to use after he completes his degree in history next June. But his postgraduate studies will wait until he finishes playing for the USA.
SWIMMING
Flanagan finishes first: John Flanagan, 25, a Punahou School graduate, won the U.S. National 10K Open Water Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., last Sunday.
Flanagan, head coach for Kamehameha Acquatics Swimming Program, will compete in the World Open Water Championship in Fukuoka, Japan, in 5K and 10K distances in July.
He also will defend his title in the Surf & Sea North Shore Challenge on July 8.
JUDO
Clinic and culture: Hawai'i Tokai International College will hold a judo and intercultural camp, July 24-27.
The camp will bring together instructors and students from Hawai'i, the Mainland, Canada and Japan. Judo clinics and lectures as well as classes in Japanese language and culture will be offered.
Cost of the judo clinic is $20 for a prepaid fee and $25 at the door. Deadline for application is July 13. Cost for the cultural class is $30, with a July 3 deadline.
