Hokule'a arrives at Kaho'olawe

More than 100 people welcomed the Hokule'a voyaging canoe to Kaho'olawe yesterday at the last stop of its yearlong sail.

The ceremony was part of a weekend celebration that organizers described as marking the journeys of the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana and the Hokule'a, both of which have been part of Hawaiian self-determination efforts.

Participants also will prepare an area for a star compass and build a trail from Honokanai'a Bay to the compass site.

State finishes mercury cleanup

The state this week completed the cleanup of mercury at an abandoned pump house near Richardson Field at Pearl Harbor.

As part of the project, the state removed an estimated 30 pounds of the toxic metal, according to officials with the Department of Health.

The pump house was the source of mercury contamination at the nearby Pu'uwai Momi public housing project in March.
