World Junior Masters tee it up at Mililani

Junior golfers from all over the world will be in Hawai'i next week to compete for the title of 2001 World Junior Masters Golf Champion.

Approximately 110 junior golfers from five countries and 13 states, including Hawai'i, will compete Tuesday through Thursday at the Mililani Golf Club.

Boys and girls, ages 7 to 18 in five categories, will play in the 54-hole tournament for a chance to receive a koa trophy and a green jacket.

Girls' defending champion Ashley Yamaguchi of Punahou Schools will return to defend her title against the No. 1-ranked (Golf Week/Titleist Points Ranking System) junior golfer, Christo Greyling of Florida. Two-time national champion Joan Shimozaki of Maui also will compete.

Tee times start at 6:44 a.m. on Tuesday, and the final round will be Thursday.

• AYSO Rainbow tourney: The 21st Annual AYSO Rainbow Soccer Tournament kicks off Wednesday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex in Waipahu after two decades at Kapi'olani Park.

The tournament, with 124 teams from Hawai'i, California, Alaska, Minnesota, Utah, Canada and Mexico, begins competition Wednesday. The finals are scheduled for July 8.

Opening ceremonies will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Diamond Head side of the Kapi'olani Park tennis courts.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Wahine hire assistant: University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Track and Field program named Andrew McInnis as assistant coach.

McInnis was coach for the Canadian National Track and Field Team through seven World Championships (1979-99) and four Olympic Games (1980-2000).

• Tennis: Punahou's Shawn Arita was selected to the ILH's first team doubles with partner Chris Farm. Arita's named was misspelled in the all-star listing.
