Child-killing case fugitive arrested

A man charged with killing his 2-year-old stepdaughter was arrested by police yesterday in Makaha.

Vernon E. King was awaiting trial for the May 8, 1985 killing of Kareatha Grey. King was indicted in 1999 and had been free on supervised release.

King's trial was to begin April 2, but authorities lost contact with him Feb. 22.

A $100,000 warrant for King's arrest was issued and he was the subject of a CrimeStoppers alert.

Based on tips to CrimeStoppers, King was arrested in an apartment at Makaha Valley Plantation yesterday at about 12:30 p.m.

No-pants burglar frightens woman

Police yesterday were searching for a half-naked cat burglar who broke into a Hau'ula home March 2 and frightened a woman.

Police said the burglary happened at about 3:40 a.m. in the Pu'uowa'a Street area while the woman was sleeping in her bedroom.

She awoke to see a man, wearing no pants, standing at the edge of her bed.

The burglar asked the woman if she smoked. The woman swore at the intruder, who apologized and then fled empty-handed.

Anyone with information should call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

No one injured by spilled acid

No one was hurt when large generator batteries toppled and leaked acid at Grosvenor Center in downtown Honolulu yesterday, a fire official said.

Firefighters reached the 10th floor of the building at 737 Bishop St. around 11:30 a.m. and contained the acid spill, fire department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said.

Batteries weighing a total of 800 pounds fell over and released acid and fumes, Soo said. An environmental response firm cleaned it up.

No one was evacuated. Two fire companies, including a hazardous materials truck and a battalion chief, responded.
