Man indicted in theft from postal union

A federal grand jury indicted a Honolulu man yesterday on five counts of embezzlement in the theft of about $5,000 from the local branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers while he served as the organization's secretary/treasurer.

The indictment also charges Glenn A. Reys Sr. with three counts of filing false statements with the U.S. Department of Labor for allegedly signing reports that said the organization made no payments to its officers in 1995, 1996 and 1997. The indictment alleges Reys wrote checks to himself during those years. Reys could not be reached for comment.

It was the second time in little more than a week that a Hawai'i labor official has been accused of stealing from union members.

On March 7, Gary Rodrigues, state director of the United Public Workers union, was indicted on 43 criminal counts, including embezzlement and money laundering, for allegedly stealing more than $200,000 from union members.
