Wai'anae boxer in semifinals

Wai'anae's Samson Guillermo, a freshman at Northern Michigan University, was the only Hawai'i boxer to advance to today's semifinals of the 2001 United States National Boxing Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Guillermo defeated Shane Stoneman of Utah, 19-4, in the 119-pound division.

The other two remaining Hawai'i fighters were eliminated yesterday.

Guillermo qualified for the United States Challenge in Lake Placid, N.Y., in April. The winners of the challenge go to the Goodwill Games and the World Championships.

Yesterday's results

106 pounds-James Lester Jr. (Michigan) def. Michael Keopuhiwa (Hawai'i), 23-19.

119 pounds-Samson Guillermo (Wai'anae) def. Shane Stoneman (Utah), 19-4.

132 pounds-Paul Malignaggi (New York) def. Ben Oscar Penovaroff (Kailua-Kona), 15-4.


WATER POLO

• USC routs Hawai'i: Sofia Konoukh scored four goals as No. 3 USC routed No. 7 Hawai'i, 13-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

USC improved to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the MPSF. Hawai'i dropped to 10-2 and 1-2.


BASEBALL

• HPU sweeps Teikyo-Post: Palani Nunes pitched a seven-inning five-hitter with no walks and six strikeouts as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Teikyo-Post (Conn.), 12-1, to sweep a doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Ryan Blood batted 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Lucas Castlen drove in three runs for HPU.

In the first game, Corey Hansen and Ryan Blood each had two hits and four RBIs as HPU routed Teikyo-Post, 22-7.

The game was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

• Komine strikes out 12: All-America right-hander Shane Komine of Honolulu struck out a season-high 12 batters and allowed one unearned run in eight innings, as No. 5 Nebraska won its 12th straight game, 13-1, at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., last night.

Komine, a junior out of Kalani High, recorded his 12th career double-digit strikeout performance and scattered three hits to improve to 5-1 this season. He moved his career strikeout total to 288, one shy of tying Mike Zajeski's school record set between 1988 and 1992.

"Everything fell into place tonight," said Komine, who has won his last five decisions. "I was able to throw a lot of strikes and that helped to set up my curveball with two strikes. The last couple of starts, I have not been effective with two strikes, but I got in to a groove and our defense was outstanding."


SOFTBALL

• Hawai'i splits: Desiree Duran pitched a two-hit shutout as Hawai'i defeated New Mexico State, 2-0, at the Kia Fullerton Classic yesterday at Fullerton, Calif.

Tyree Woodruff batted 3-for-3 and Stacie Hirano went 2-for-4 for the Wahine.

In an earlier game, Washington defeated Hawai'i, 4-0.


SWIMMING

• Hawai'i women in 14th place: The University of Hawai'i is in 14th place after the first day of the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at East Meadow, N.Y.

Auburn leads the 32-team meet with 121.5 points. Hawai'i has 24.

The UH 200-yard freestyle relay team finished seventh with a time of 1:31.33.
