Nevada rallies to defeat Hilo in WAC baseball

Nevada rallied from an 11-2 deficit to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo, 13-12, in 10 innings in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game at Reno, Nev., yesterday.

Nevada scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 11. Hilo went ahead in the top of the 10th when Brian Rooke scored on fielder's choice.

The Wolfpack loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, and with two outs, Hilo relief pitcher Anthony Bernal hit Michael Haas to force in a run and tie it at 12. Bernal then walked Alex Rangel to force in Clay Belding with the winning run.

Seven homers were hit in the game, including four by the Vulcans.

Hilo is 3-18 overall, 2-11 in the WAC. Nevada is 11-12 and 6-6.

• HPU sweeps: Ryan Blood, Wade Taguchi and Tom Peters each drove in three runs as Hawai'i Pacific routed Teikyo-Post (Conn.), 18-5, yesterday to sweep a doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Teikyo-Post issued seven walks and committed seven errors.

In the first game, Bryce Uegawachi batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lift HPU over Teikyo-Post, 12-1.

Matt Zachary pitched a seven-inning complete game, striking out five and walking two.

HPU improved to 16-10 and has won nine straight. Teikyo-Post dropped to 0-8.


SOFTBALL

• HPU sweeps: Jessica Parra and Malia Sullivan each tossed three-hit shutouts as Hawai'i Pacific swept a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Parkside yesterday at HPU Windward Field.

In the first game, Parra walked none and struck out three as HPU defeated Wisconsin-Parkside, 3-0.

The Sea Warriors' Kim Fukumoto drove in two runs.

In the second game, Sullivan walked none and struck out three as HPU won 3-0.

HPU improved to 23-1. Wisconsin-Parkside dropped to 2-6.

• Chaminade sweeps: Christine Pascua hit a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Kelly Kaaihili pitched a seven-hit shutout as Chaminade defeated St. Xavier (Ill.), 2-0, yesterday to sweep a doubleheader at Palolo Field.

Kaaihili walked none and struck out four.

In the first game, Melisha Ausua singled in Kim Balles in the bottom of the ninth inning as Chaminade defeated St. Xavier, 2-1.

Melissa Marquez pitched a complete game with three walks and six strikeouts.

• BYUH 4, Occidental 0: Lyndi Frei pitched a two-hit shutout with three walks and five strikeouts as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Occidental (Calif.), 2-0, in a game yesterday at BYUH Field in La'ie.

Occidental committed five errors and all four Seasider runs were unearned.


SWIMMING AND DIVING

• Hawai'i 20th: The University of Hawai'i was 20th after the second day of the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championship yesterday at Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

Auburn led with 265 points, followed by Georgia (261) and Stanford (254.5). Hawai'i has 32 points.


QUARTERBACK CLUB

Tomey to speak: Dick Tomey, former head football coach at the University of Arizona and Hawai'i, is scheduled to speak at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting at noon at the Pagoda International Ballroom.

Also scheduled to speak are Rich Miano, UH defensive backs coach; Markus Owens of the UH sports information office and color commentator for UH baseball telecasts; and Todd Los Banos, head wrestling coach of boys state champion St. Louis School.

St. Louis wrestler Travis Lee will be honored as male Sportsperson of the Month.


BOXING

• Guillermo loses: Wai'anae's Samson Guillermo lost in the semifinals to Minnesota's Jason Litzau, 23-13, in the 119-pound division at the 2001 United States National Boxing Championships yesterday at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Guillermo still qualifies for the U.S. Challenge April 8-11.


GYMNASTICS

• Karolyi in Hawai'i: Bela Karolyi will be at the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Karolyi will give a motivational talk, which will be followed by a photo and autograph signing session.


BASKETBALL

• ILH: Tai Soo scored 15 points and Courtney Chi scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter as Kamehameha routed Mid-Pacific, 70-19, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game last night at Damien.

The Warriors outscored the Owls 35-5 in the fourth quarter.

Other scores

• 'Iolani 54, Maryknoll 38: Monica Tokoro scored 21 points and Trisha Nishimoto added 16 as the host Raiders defeated the Spartans.

Michelle Baduria scored 12 points to lead Maryknoll.

• Punahou 63, University High 28: Rachel Kane scored 18 points as the Buffanblu defeated the Jr. Bows.

Diane Okubo scored 13 points for University High.
