Disabled preschool children eligible for tuition subsidies

By Zenaida Serrano Espanol

If your preschool-age child is disabled, you should know that Preschool Open Doors, a state program that provides preschool tuition assistance, is accepting applications for open enrollment through April 30.

The current enrollment period focuses on providing assistance to 4-year-old children born in 1997 and 3-year-old children born in 1998 who have special needs, such as physical or developmental disabilities, or who belong to families with low incomes.

Families accepted into the program can choose any licensed preschool for their children. Preschool Open Doors provides qualifying families with a monthly preschool tuition subsidy based on family size and income. The period begins August or September 2001 for a maximum of 10 months.

The program is financed by the Benefit, Employment and Support Services division in the state Department of Human Services. For information or to request an application, call 587-5254 or toll-free at 1-800-746-5620.
