Punahou holds off Kamehameha, 5-4

Punahou scored three runs in the second inning and Reid Matsushima pitched a complete game to lead the Buffanblu to a 5-4 baseball victory over Kamehameha.

The game was one of four Interscholastic League of Honolulu season openers played at Ala Wai Field yesterday.

Matsushima gave up six hits and struck out four in seven innings. He also was 2-for-3, including two doubles.

• 'Iolani 4, St. Louis 3: Kila Kaaihue hit a bases-empty home run in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Raiders past the Crusaders.

Kaaihue was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.

Winning pitcher Cory Yamamoto gave up six hits, striking out two in six innings.

• Mid-Pacific 6, Pac-Five 5: The Owls survived a three-run seventh inning by Pac-Five in their season opener.

Mid-Pacific led 6-2 entering the bottom of seventh.

Isaac Omura was 2-for-3, including a double for the Owls. Kori Shinagawa was 3-for-3 with three RBIs for Pac-Five.

MAUI BASEBALL

• No-hitter: Four Baldwin pitchers combined for a no-hitter as the Bears routed Ka'ahumanu Hou, 14-0, in a Maui Interscholastic League baseball game at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui yesterday.

In other games, King Kekaulike defeated Moloka'i, 11-4; Maui stopped Seabury, 10-0 and Lahainaluna defeated St. Anthony, 12-6.

• Kamehameha wins: Noelle Russell scored 18 points and Megan Ching added 12 as Kamehameha defeated host 'Iolani, 50-46, last night in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball game.

Monica Tokoro scored 19 points and Trisha Nishimoto added 13 for the Raiders.
