Carol Burnett, a former Island resident and comedienne-actress on television and stage, will bring her "Laughter and Reflection with Carol Burnett" to Hawai'i Theatre for a benefit performance at 8 p.m. May 12.

Carol Burnett, who has done television comedy, dramatic acting and Broadway, lived in Hawai'i for a while.

The Hawai'i Theatre is presenting the intimate one-woman show, in which Burnett reminisces and shares her particular brand of humor, and microphones are placed throughout the theater to allow the audience to ask her questions.

"Carol Burnett is a longtime friend of the Hawai'i Theatre, having attended our tribute last year to Jim Nabors and having been supportive of our restoration, since she lived for many years in Honolulu," said Sarah Richards, Hawai'i Theatre Center president.

A six-time Emmy Award winner, Burnett has been selling out this interactive production around the country. The production is in a limited national engagement.

Since concluding her 11-year-run of "The Carol Burnett Show," one of TV's landmark showcases for comedy and variety, Burnett has demonstrated such versatility that she now is widely recognized for her dramatic abilities as well as comedic and musical talents. In recent years, she has performed on Broadway in the Stephen Sondheim musical review "Putting It Together," and the farcical "Moon Over Buffalo," for which she was nominated for a Tony Award.

Awards have been her middle name: Burnett has won the People's Choice Award, five Golden Globes, a Peabody Award (for "Friendly Fire") and the Ace Award (for "Between Friends," with Elizabeth Taylor).

Merrill Lynch is underwriting the show here, and sponsors include the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawai'i, United Airlines, KSSK and Elite Limousine, allowing the Hawai'i Theatre Center to recoup the bulk of the proceeds.

Tickets: $35 to $75; a VIP package at $125 includes premier seating, an autographed photo of the star and a post-show on-stage party after the performance; on sale at the box office starting tomorrow for Hawai'i Theatre members, and beginning March 30 for the general public.

Phone charges: 528-0506.
