Punahou track meet in 39th year

The 39-year-old Punahou Girls Invitational track and field meet has been renamed the Ralph Martinson Invitational, in honor of Punahou's long-time former athletic director.
Martinson retired in 1994 after 40 years at Punahou, including 30 years as athletic director of the state's most successful athletic program. Over those 40 years, he officiated at thousands of track meets.
This year's meet will be Saturday at Punahou's Alexander Field and Atherton Track, with field events beginning at 8 a.m.
Opening ceremonies, at which Martinson will be honored, will be at 9:30.
The turnout of public schools is smaller than usual this year because of conflicts with other meets and because many public schools are on spring break, Punahou coach and meet director Steve Link said. "We hope to have some of the individual standouts and some representation from Farrington and McKinley because they were here for the first meet 39 years ago," Link said.
The ILH held its third weekly meet last Saturday at Punahou.
