FOOTBALL

Raiola honored: Nebraska's Dominic Raiola was named the winner of the inaugural Dave Rimington Trophy as college football's Center of the Year.

Raiola, a St. Louis School graduate, edged Ben Hamilton of Minnesota for the award, according to a media release from the Boomer Esiason Foundation, sponsors of the award.

At 6 feet 2 and 300 pounds, Raiola is expected to be picked early in the upcoming NFL draft.

According to the foundation, Raiola was given the award because he was named to five Division I-A All-America first teams, more than any other center in 2000.

The trophy's namesake, Dave Rimington, was a consensus All-America center at Nebraska in 1981 and 1982.

MEMORIAL FUND

Donations accepted: A memorial fund has been established for University of Hawai'i swimmer Tammy Tye, who died Friday in a traffic accident in Mo'ili'ili, UH officials announced yesterday.

The 19-year-old sophomore from England was riding her bicycle in a crosswalk when she was struck by a car at about 8:10 p.m.

Donations may be made payable to the Tammy Tye Memorial Fund at any First Hawaiian Bank branch. The money will be used to help Tye's family with travel and funeral expenses, the UH press release said.
