Kapolei parents want school built

Advertiser Staff

Kapolei parents have started a letter-writing campaign to petition legislators to come up with $44 million to finish constructing Kapolei High School.

At the Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokai Hale Neighborhood Board meeting last night, Chairwoman Maeda Timson said the school is a critical part of the growing community and said she has been flooded with calls and letters from residents who want to make sure the project is completed.

Kapolei High, which opened in July, is being built in increments, and two of four classroom buildings remain to be completed. The rest is in jeopardy for lack of money.

Gov. Ben Cayetano included the $44 million in his executive budget, but the House has allotted only $11 million in its budget for the school.

Parents are worried their children might be forced to attend Campbell High, which would disrupt their education and lives.
