KAHULUI, Maui Rumors of a threatened shooting on campus caused Department of Education officials to send Maui High School students home this morning. The school, with an enrollment of 1,734 pupils, will remain closed tomorrow as public schools head into a weeklong spring break.
There were no actual incidents of violence or attempted violence, and no arrests have been made. Officers from the Maui Police Department were on campus this morning and are investigating leads.
Maui High Principal Dennis Manalili asked DOE officials to close the school "because the heightened anxiety of students, parents, teachers and staff created a disruptive environment that school officials and police could not contain," according to a DOE news release.
