Bus fares likely to rise July 1

By Robbie Dingeman

The Honolulu City Council Budget Committee yesterday approved a modest bus fare increase that appears headed for final passage on April 4.

Riders would pay the higher fare starting July 1. The last time fares went up was in 1995.

Single-ride fares would increase to $1.50 for adults and 75 cents for students. Monthly passes would rise to $27 for adults, $13.50 for students. Elders would pay $20 for a one-year pass that would cost $300 for adult riders and $150 for students.

Budget Committee Chairman Steve Holmes said the increases have Council majority support because they are "reasonable" and won't have a negative long-term impact on passenger numbers.
