UH softball team wins two in Invitational

April Crowell went 2-for-3, including a homer and Sheri Oronoz hit a two-run homer to lift the University of Hawai'i softball team to a 5-2 victory over San Diego State during the opening day of the Wahine Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

In the final game last night, Hawai'i pounded Wright State (Ohio), 11-4.

With the Wahine leading 2-0 in their first game, Oronoz and Crowell hit consecutive homers in the fifth inning. Oronoz hit her first homer of the season with Marie Jackson on first base. Crowell followed with her fourth homer of the season.

The Aztecs scored two runs in the top of the seventh.

Felicity Witt (13-5) pitched a complete game for UH (24-10).

In the final game of the night, the Wahine pounded 16 hits.

UH pitcher Desiree Duran (7-3) allowed four earned runs, six hits, struck out nine and walked three in a seven-inning complete game.

Crowell and Natalie Gonzales each had three hits for Hawai'i.

In other first-day games, Tokyo Toiyotaitai stopped San Diego 4-3, Eastern Illinois defeated McNeese State 1-0, San Diego State edged McNeese (La.) State 2-1, Tokyo Toiyotaitai stopped Eastern Illinois 2-0, and San Diego beat Wright State, 5-3.

The seven-team tournament runs through Sunday.


BASEBALL

• TCU tops Hilo: Tom Bates hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning to lift Texas Christian to a 7-4 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in the opener of a Western Athletic Conference baseball series at Wong Stadium last night.

Texas Christian is 18-9, 9-2 in the WAC. Hilo is 4-20 and 3-13.

Bates was 3-for-5 for Texas Christian. Johnny Dudoit had three hits for the Vulcans.

The three-game series continues today.

WATER POLO

• Kern, Brooks named: Punahou graduates Sean Kern and Brandon Brooks were named to the USA Men's National Team for the Pan American Qualification tournament in La Romana, Dominican Republic Sunday through next Thursday.

They won their spots last weekend in a three-game warm-up series against the Canadian National Team in Calgary.

Kern, 21, scored five goals, including two go-ahead scores. Brooks, 19, played the second half of each game in goal.

Kern and Brooks were All-Americans on UCLA's NCAA championship team last fall. Kern was college Player of the Year the last two years and played on the U.S. Olympic team at Sydney, Australia. Brooks is on the national team for the first time.


TENNIS

• Fried wins Cup: Honolulu attorney Rick Fried played on the victorious United States Columbus Cup team this month in New Delhi, India.

This year's Cup matched senior players from 14 countries, with two singles and two doubles matches in the 55 and 65 age groups. Fried played in the 55 division.

The United States, seeded second, defeated Great Britain in the final, after getting past Holland and Belgium. Defending champion South Africa was upset by Japan, which then lost to Great Britain.
