Island musicians release the three best-of compilations

A best-of compilation is an easy way to introduce, or rediscover, a performer. The stroll down memory lane also is a commercial means to jump-start a career when a new CD is not on the immediate horizon.

Three Island acts have new best-of collections worthy of your consideration:

"OUR BEST TO YOU, VOLS. I AND II" by Randy, Gay and Andrew Hongo, Christian Vision CV-116.

Randy and Gay have been staples on the Island Christian music front; son Andrew periodically has joined them in performance and on recordings.

This two-disc sampler features previously recorded and new material. Disc I, first issued in 1991, assembles 15 titles from Hongos' growing repertoire of inspirational tunes, including "Aloha Ke Akua," "When Two Became One," "Lord of the Islands" and "How Great Thou Art." Of particular interest: "Never Far From Home," the couples' homage to their son; Andrew, in angelic, boyish voice, is alternately joined by mom and dad, in a tune about moving on and growing up, a joyous exploration of the empty nest, where the bond of familial love makes home only a heartbeat away.

Disc II contains more Hongo compositions, such as "A New Song in the Islands" and "Love You More," along with a grown-up, college-age Andrew performing with the Yale university a cappella choirs, Living Waters and the Yale Whiffenpoofs. The collection becomes a snapshot of a maturing family, still bonded by faith and love. FYI, Andrew, who'll be 23 next month, graduated magna cum laude last May with a bachelor's degree in English.

"THE KRUSH: THE 20 GREATEST HITS!" by the Krush, Bluewater Records BWCD 1098.

The faces and the names have changed over the years, but the Krush remains one of Waikiki's show favorites. As this CD attests, the group also has been providing a bounty of hits for pop radio stations to fill, well, a CD.

So what if Hal Bradbury has moved on? "Waialua Sky," "Hold Tight" and "Blame It on the Night" have endured. And without regrets, Bobby Gonzales' "Regrets" continues to be a cherished memory.

Some things, however, haven't changed. Edwin Ramones still is part of the Krush corps and "My Hawai'i," the old Rascals fave, is here in his good embrace.

If you've forgotten, the roster of hits also includes "Angie My Love," "Mauna Loa," "All the Time," "In Way Over My Heart," "In the Night" and "If Only Could." If you were part of the first wave when the Krush were pumping out these gems, this package is tailor-made for you.

While the CD lacks descriptive annotations of each tune, it's worth noting a portentous line in Brian Robertshaw's and Bonnie Gearheart's "Waialua Sky" that "nothing stays the same," underscoring the musical chairs within this combo.

"THE BEST OF ILONA" by Ilona Irvine, Rose Records ROS 2000.

Ilona Irvine's best-of offering includes two bonus tracks, live renderings of two of her singular successes: "Pretty Sugar Pie" and "Open Arms." The original recordings of both are also here, along with melodies that have shaped her career here, including "Tide Is High," "Maui Waltz," "Sweet Memory" and "Island Boy."

The sampler reflects the prevailing Island rhythm motif, embracing reggae tempos and rockaballads. Since her debut album "Pretty Sugar Pie" is out of print, this package is the answer for your Ilona fix.
