'Aiea uses driving Lane to basketball victory

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

'Aiea's Aritta Lane turned in a huge performance against Campbell last night despite playing a little more than half the game.

'Aiea's Keesha Aldridge soared over two Campbell players for a clear shot during last night's OIA West opener for Na Ali'i. Aldridge scored eight points as 'Aiea romped to a 55-20 victory.

Lane scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as host 'Aiea routed Campbell, 55-20, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division game. It was the opener for 'Aiea. Campbell is 1-1.

Lane scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds as Na Ali'i jumped out to a 15-0 lead after the first quarter.

Lane has committed to Fresno State University for next season.

"She's a Division I prospect," Campbell coach Nathan Macadangdang said. "She's got great hands and good footwork. She can go far (in college)."

Campbell missed 13 shots and committed seven turnovers in the quarter.

"We came out pretty aggressive," 'Aiea coach Fran Villarmia-Kahawai said. "We didn't play for a week and a half or so, so they were a little antsy. But we did what we needed to do."

Campbell's first points came 2:15 into the second quarter on a field goal by Hoku Leiato, which made the score 19-2.

The Sabers closed the first half with a 9-1 run against Na Ali'i's reserves to cut the deficit to 20-9. Campbell made 4-of-6 shots to end the half.

In the second quarter, 'Aiea shot 0-of-6 from the field and committed six turnovers.

Campbell made just 1-of-11 free throw attempts in the first half, and finished 1-of-13.

"It's a lack on concentration," Macadangdang said. "We run a lot of free-throw shooting (drills), but when it comes game time it's a little different."

During a 6:10 stretch of the second half, Na Ali'i scored 18 consecutive points to pull away to a 46-15 lead with 5:15 remaining.

Lane, who stands 5 feet 11, and the 6-foot-1 Keesha Aldridge used their size to dominate the paint area. Aldridge finished with eight points.

"Our girls played hard considering our tallest girl is 5-10," Macadangdang said. "We matched up as best as we could. We're not a very big team, so we're going to work it in (close to the basket) when we can."

Lane scored most of her points on drives and putbacks. She also passed the ball to open teammates when she got the ball down low.

"She knows she's going to be double teammed a lot so she's looking for the open person," Villarmia-Kahawai said.

'Aiea's largest lead was 55-18 with 3:20 remaining.

Villarmia-Kahawai used all of her players, and started resting starters early in the game.

"Anytime you get all of the players in the game, it's a plus because they work hard in practice," Villarmia-Kahawai said. "They deserve to play."

Said Macadangdang: "We just didn't play our game, our shots just didn't drop."
