TCU's Bradshaw no-hits UH-Hilo

Senior Chris Bradshaw pitched a no-hitter to lift Texas Christian to a 9-0 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game at Wong Stadium in Hilo last night.

Bradshaw faced the minimum number of batters entering the ninth inning. Bryce Watanabe struck out to start the ninth, but reached first on a wild pitch. Bradshaw then hit Doug Rhodes before retiring the final three batters.

Bradshaw, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound righthander, struck out 10 and walked none to improve his record to 6-1.

The Horned Frogs scored five runs in the first on four walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch, a balk and two hits.

WEIGHTLIFTING

National lifters: Honolulu's Kyle Yamauchi, 17, won the National Junior Weightlifting Championship and three other Hawai'i lifters took second last week in Charleston, Ill.

Yamauchi's lifts included 204 pounds in the snatch and 242 pounds in the clean and jerk for a total of 446 pounds, which is a new state record for the 136-pound class, according to Tommy Kono.

Yamauchi's brother, Bryce, 15, took second in the 123-pound class. His lifts were 171 pounds (snatch) and 209 pounds (clean and jerk).

Two female lifters took home silver medals. Honolulu's Chani Matsui, 13, placed second in the 93-pound class with a total lift of 204 pounds (88 snatch, 116 clean and jerk). Waipahu's Kristel Ajifu, 16, took second in the 106-pound class with a total lift of 231 pounds (99, 132).


BOXING

Arizona beats Hawai'i: Arizona's Mario Ramos decisioned Honolulu's Saul Hogan, in the eight-round main event during Tuesday night's Hawai'i Professional Boxing, Inc., card at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

In other bouts:

• Shivan Nunez of Los Angeles decisioned Hawai'i's Clay Lewis in a four-rounder.

• Palolo heavyweight Matt Taufette knocked out Mexico's Omar Fernandez in the second round.

• Kalihi's Jerry Seraby won a four-round decision over Los Angeles boxer Leo Capila.

• Kalihi's Michael Balasi won a four-round decision over Los Angeles' Bryan Brooks.


COLLEGE DIVING

UH diver 22nd: Freshman diver Mike Gowdy, University of Hawai'i's lone representative, finished 22nd in the 3-meter springboard event at the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships yesterday at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium at Texas A&M.

Gowdy scored a 473.15 Only the top eight qualifiers advanced to today's finals.

Gowdy also placed 32nd in the 1-meter springboard event Thursday with a score of 237.80. The NCAA Championships concludes today, as Gowdy competes in platform diving.
