It's time check out your 'roots'

The next Bishop Museum Family Sunday may be just the thing for the folks in your family if they have green thumbs — or maybe even more so if they don't.

"Family Sunday Island Style — Back to Our Roots," 9 a.m.-5 p.m. next Sunday at the museum, will be a day of fun with an educational goal: to draw attention to the important roles agriculture and aquaculture play in the community. Museum visitors can join in poi pounding, buy native plants, view lei making and information booths, and listen to a "plant doctor" diagnose illnesses in flora. Also, cloned mice from the University of Hawai'i will be on exhibit, and entertainers Colon, Kanalo, and Blaine Kai & Halau Hula will perform on the Great Lawn.

Residents and military with valid ID pay $3 per person, $10 for a family of four (two adults, two children ages 4-12); nonresidents, $14.95. Each child who brings along an original color drawing of a favorite plant root – taro, carrots, hibiscus root, whatever tickles his or her fancy – gets in free. Call 848-4160 for information.
