Punahou stops 'Iolani's challenge, 41-39

'Iolani and Punahou added another epic battle to their long-running girls' basketball rivalry last night.

Punahou's Elyse Umeda puts up a shot despite the defensive pressure of 'Iolani's Monica Tokoro during last night's ILH game.

Milia Macfarlane scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half and Caroline Ane added eight as host Punahou edged 'Iolani, 41-39, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game.

'Iolani took a 31-29 lead with 5:37 remaining after Tricia Nishimoto scored seven consecutive points to open the fourth quarter.

After missing their first six shots of the fourth quarter, the Buffanblu hit four in a row to go up 37-32 with 2:40 remaining.

"It wasn't our best performance, but we persevered and pulled through in the last quarter," said Macfarlane.

'Iolani (2-2) closed to 37-36, but the Buffanblu made 4 of 5 free- throw attempts in the final 2:25 to take a 41-36 lead with 6.5 seconds remaining.

"Basically it was one or two turnovers," said 'Iolani coach Glenn Takara. "We kind of lost it mentally. But our girls played very hard. It's the second tough one we lost, but they'll come back."

Monica Tokoro scored six points as 'Iolani went on a 12-5 run to open the game.

Punahou (4-0) responded with a 14-2 run to take a 19-14 lead with 2:50 left in the first half. Kira Kashiwa capped the rally with a 3-pointer from the right wing and a 12-footer from the left side.

'Iolani made only 2-of-12 field- goal attempts and committed five turnovers in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Punahou made five of its first 11 shots, including two 3-pointers.

The teams combined to make five field goals and 13 turnovers in the third quarter.

"What a great game 'Iolani played," Punahou coach Shelley Fey said. "They took advantage of every mistake we made and they capitalized on it. The tenacity of our team kept us in it."

In its previous three victories, Punahou won by an average of 33 points.

"It was the first team we were in close contention with," Fey said. "We needed a game like that because without games like that you don't really get better. It's a big game for us down the road."

Tokoro finished with 15 points and Nishimoto added 10.

"We know they can make plays with the pressure we had on them," Fey said. "We had to do our best with help defense and our post people had to step up."

Both teams made 15 of 43 field- goal attempts.

"This was a real test for us considering it's 'Iolani and they have a long legacy of being a tough team and a tough matchup," Macfarlane said.

The Buffanblu leave today for Los Angeles, where they will play three games during spring break.
