TCU trips up UHH in WAC baseball

Justin Crowder and Stan Newton teamed on a four-hitter as Texas Christian University defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 3-1, in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Crowder worked 7¡ innings, striking out two and walking one. Newton finished with 1á hitless innings, striking out three and walking none.

Daniel Macha and Jason Price each had two hits for TCU (20-9 overall, 11-2 WAC). Todd Jinbo had two hits for UHH (4-22, 3-15).

UHH starter Ben Siff allowed five hits and one run over seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.

The Horned Frogs, who tied the score at 1 in the eighth inning, scored two unearned runs against reliever Anthony Bernal in the ninth. Price doubled to make it 2-1, then scored an insurance run on a throwing error.

• WRESTLING

Island girls fare well: Four Hawai'i high-school girls and three collegians yesterday reached the semifinals or finals of the U.S. Girls Wrestling Association national championships.

In the High School division, Kristen Fujioka of Castle at 100 pounds, Elizabeth Torres of Kahuku (111), Melissa Fukushima of Punahou (114) and Anna Tong of Kaiser (137) will seek final berths today at Lake Orion, Mich.

In the Collegiate division, 113-pounder Katie Kunimoto (Castle '99) has reached the finals and 130-pounder Jill Remeticado of Oregon's Pacific University (Iolani '99) has reached today's semifinals. Remeticado won both her matches yesterday by pins. Kunimoto won by a pin in 34 seconds and an 8-2 decision.

Stephanie Bolton (Radford '00) of Kentucky's Cumberland College lost in the first round of the 160-pound division.

In the High School division, Fujioka pinned two opponents; Torres scored a pin in 37 seconds and a major (12-4) decision; Fukushima won by 10-2 and 11-4 and a pin; and Tong won both her matches on pins.

Five Hawai'i high schoolers reached the consolation semifinals and will finish in the top 12. They are Justine Swafford, Kahuku (105); Shanel Vivas, Kahuku (111); DeAnna Lau, Punahou (122); Jennifer Miyahira, Mid-Pacific (129); and Ashley Gaspar, Nanakuli (165).

Three girls were eliminated in the Round of 16: Stacey Musick, Kawai Chee and Leilani Relator, all of Kahuku.
