Tokyo stocks open higher

TOKYO — Stocks advanced moderately in early trading today following gains in U.S. shares Friday. The dollar was higher against the yen.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 95.18 points, or 0.72 percent, to 13,309.72 at the start of morning trading. On Friday, the average closed up 360.57 points, or 2.8 percent.

The dollar bought 123.62 yen, up 0.80 yen from late Friday in Tokyo and also above its New York level of 122.50 yen on Friday.

On the stock market, the Nikkei index opened higher after investors were cheered by Friday's advance on Wall Street.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average climbed 115.30 to 9,504.78 at Friday's close. The Nasdaq composite index ended at 1,928.68, up 30.98.

The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index of all issues listed on the first section rose 9.85 points, or 0.77 percent, to 1,291.45 at today's open. The TOPIX closed up 22.41 points, or 1.78 percent, on Friday.

In currency dealings, the yen remained under the selling pressure of recent weeks amid renewed uncertainty about Japan's economy.

In other currencies, the euro was traded at 109.62 yen, up from 109.44 yen late Friday in Tokyo.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond was unquoted early today. On Friday, it settled at 1.1850 percent and its price stood at 99.24.
