THIS WEEK AND BEYOND

• A multi-week course to help low- and moderate-income, first-time home buyers will be offered at various locations this month and next by the Waimanalo Community Development Corp. Topics will include home selection, down payment assistance, fixing credit problems, obtaining lower mortgage interest rates, and saving and budgeting. • The annual University of Hawai'i, School of Travel Industry Management (TIM) Night, a pairing of UH, community college, and public high school travel students with professional mentors from the community, will be held 5:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel. • Prudential Securities is the host of a day-long 2001 Investment Expo, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hawai'i Convention Center. Workshops will feature local investment, securities and insurance firms and will focus on investment topics such as long-term health care, a declining market, inheritance matters, real estate market updates, and college savings. APRIL 4

• Thomas Lee Boam, the minister counselor for commercial affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, will offer a luncheon lecture on the topic "China in Transition: Opportunities for Hawaii Businesses" 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 4. Boam will also lead a panel discussion on challenges and opportunities for Hawai'i companies for doing business in China. Presented by the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, the U.S. Department of Commerce and others. The event takes place at the Garden Room, East-West Center. • The second in a series of workshops on the emerging popularity of alternative health care and wellness regime in the tourism industry will be offered next month on the Big Island. The workshop is one of the first in a series, sponsored by the Hawai'i Women's Business Center, designed specifically for health and wellness tourism business owners, operators and start-ups.
