State lawmakers received millions of dollars in campaign contributions over the past four years, with much of the money coming from lobbyists and special interests.
The following lists, in the gray box at right, include contributions received by selected legislative leaders and committee chairmen from Nov. 6, 1996 to Dec. 31, 2000.

The totals tend to understate the amounts contributed by each industry for several reasons. Candidates do not need to itemize contributions if they are for less than $100, which means there is no public record of small contributions.
Also, most lawmakers do not disclose the employers or occupations of most of their donors. State law requires candidates must disclose employers and occupations of all donors who contribute $1,000 or more, but candidates do not need to disclose employers or occupations for donors who contribute less than $1,000.
