Ex-Punahou runner 61st in the world

Victoria Chang of Honolulu finished 61st Saturday in the 13th IAAF World Cross Country Junior Women's championship race on a muddy 4-kilometer course near the North Sea in Ostend, Belgium.

Chang, 19, finished in 24 minutes, 37 seconds. She was 2:32 behind winner Viola Kibiwot, 17, of Kenya. The first three runners had the same time and photographs were examined to determine a winner.

The first 10 finishers were from Kenya or Ethiopia. Chang was the No. 2 finisher from the United States.

Chang is a 2000 Punahou graduate and a freshman at Stanford.


WATER POLO

• Wahine split: Karin vanHoff, Andy Nishioka and Rebecca Angus scored three goals apiece as the visiting University of Hawai'i Wahine swamped Santa Clara, 17-6, yesterday.

The Wahine then fell to San Jose State, 7-6, despite three goals by Joanne Ansell.

UH is 13-4 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

• Kern helps USA: Tony Azevedo scored three goals and Sean Kern's goal in the final minute secured victory as the USA came from behind to defeat Canada, 5-2, yesterday in the opening round of the FINA World Championship qualification tournament in La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Kern, of Honolulu, was the NCAA Player of the Year the past two collegiate seasons for UCLA.
