The more we work, the more we need to simplify other aspects of our lives. The more we travel, the simpler we want our travel detritus to be. That goes for makeup.

Kathleen Carter travels for living. She's a Delta Air Airlines flight attendant, and her schedule involves flying to and from Hawai'i eight times a month. She has packing down to a science, packing her makeup into one little booklet the size of her day planner. She uses makeup icon Trish McEvoy's clever innovation, The Planner, a makeup case that acts like a Day Planner – a Franklin for the face, so to speak.

The case contains several styles of "pages" that can be removed to work on their own, plus a pouch that turns into a small cosmetic case. The pages look like an artist's palette. They have pukas for eyeshadows, eyeliners, brow color, blushes, even foundation. The palette is magnetized so colors can be changed with ease. At the back is a sectioned pouch for brushes that has Velcro so it can be removed readily. McEvoy makes her fragrances in a solid form so they can be included in the Planner.

Carter owns two Planners. She keeps the larger one at home or in her suitcase, and takes the smaller one with her everywhere. "I always know where everything is, and I don't have to dig," she said. She also likes the flexibility the system affords. "I can take a palette and put it in my evening bag, and I'll have everything I need for a night out."

Another advantage: You can take it with you to the cosmetic counter so you don't buy a color you already have. The Trish McEvoy Planner is available at Neiman Marcus Ala Moana for $48 (small) and $58 (large). Individual pages are $13.
